As a basketball player at Georgetown Ewing was one of the top players of his era and one of the best of all-time in terms of allowing his personal greatness to positively influence the success of his team in terms of wins and losses. During the four years that Ewing played center for Georgetown University his team reached the college basketball national championship game during three of those seasons (winning in 1984). Georgetown Tunnels
Georgetown University houses a series of underground tunnels that go between buildings of the school and into downtown Washington, DC. There are many theories as to why these tunnels are built.
There are some who insist that the tunnels are merely used for heat pipes from newer to older buildings on campus. This makes sense, as the school was founded in 1789 and houses some very antiquated buildings.
There are others that suggest that the tunnels were part of an underground railroad. During the Civil War, Georgetown was used as a hospital to house both Northern and Southern soldiers. In fact, the colors of Georgetown, blue and grey, are said to represent both the union and confederate sides. It would make a lot of sense that any underground railroad from the South would want to end up at least at Washington, DC, the capital of the Union and a place where slavery was illegal.
A third, more popular theory is based on Georgetown's capacity as the backup Congress (where Congress would conduct its meetings should anything happen to the capitol). Should any attack on the country's capital happen, many members of the executive and legislative branch would be rushed into the tunnel system as an escape route from the attack. As such, many of the most important politicians in the world, including the President himself, would have traveled through the tunnels that lead directly underneath the university's campus. In 1873 a University was founded in the town of Georgetown. Southwestern University, the oldest school in Texas, is still there and has a storied history all its own. This University, coupled with the advent of the Austin and Northwestern Railroad, brought a steady influx of new residents to the area. This pattern continued steadily all the way throughout the city's history.
Agriculture, specifically cotton, was a driving factor of population growth in the town until sometime around the 1950s when the general makeup of the city began to change. As Austin continued to grow larger and quicker, the effect of that growth was felt by many neighboring communities. By the 1960s, the main form of growth within Georgetown was no longer one based on railroads and agriculture, but was instead one based on an influx of residential and commercial properties.
In 1963, while building an interstate, a large cave was discovered, the first in the area. Inner space cavern, as it was to be known, was a massive cave structure that prior to this point was completely undiscovered. Large portions of the cave structure remain unexplored and for this reason the cave has become a very popular tourist destination. The cave opened for tourists in 1966 and has remained active ever since. Visitors are loaded into a cable car that descends into the cave and are able to tour over a mile of the cave's structure.
As of last census the area could boast approximately 30,000 residents. Thanks to the attraction of the College and the cave, the area has been relatively untouched by the recession affecting the rest of the nation. Home prices have remained steady, as has the median income of the area.

Alonzo Mourning was born on February 8, 1970 to a father who shares his first, middle, and last name. The future NBA superstar with the popular nickname Zo actually has the given name of Alonzo Harding Mourning, Junior. Before going onto NBA and collegiate fame at Georgetown University he grew up as a youngster around Chesapeake, Virginia.
As a standout center on his Indiana River High School basketball team in Chesapeake, Virginia Alonzo was a star player that attracted national attention from college scouts looking to recruit his talents. His success as a high school prep star was demonstrated in the outstanding record that his team produced while he was in uniform there. At one point during his high school basketball career the team Alonzo Mourning played for went on a 51 game winning streak as part of a state championship title run that the team made during his junior year.
As a senior in high school Mourning continued to flourish. At any level of basketball whether it is high school, college, or the NBA the feat of accomplishing a triple-double in a single game is a tremendous accomplishment as it represents a significant impact on the game in a well-rounded manner. A triple-double is defined as statistically reaching double digits in three different positive statistical categories. The most common triple-double involves scoring at least ten points in a game while also grabbing at least ten rebounds and dishing out a minimum of ten assists. Over the course of his senior season at Indian River High School, Alonzo Mourning averaged a triple-double. The Final 4 for the 2007 NCAA Tourney - Florida, Ohio State, UCLA & Georgetown
Now there are only four teams left, exactly as the statistics predicted. No more than two No. 1 seeds advanced to the Final 4 in 18 of the last 22 years and now it will be 19 of the last 23 years. And no team seeded below No. 4 has won the championship for 18 consecutive years and this year will make it 19 consecutive years.
There is much weeping for the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Kansas Jayhawks, both No. 1 seeds who were beaten by their No. 2 Seed opponents over the weekend.
The Final 4 will be No. 1 Florida against No. 2 UCLA, and No. 1 Ohio State against No. 2 Georgetown.
Forget last year's miracle team-George Mason-and the Cinderella team of two years ago-Butler. This year's almost underdog miracle-UNLV-made it to the Sweet 16 but was promptly dispatched by Oregon, 76-72.
Despite all of the hoopla about Butler this year, last year's national champion Florida proved just as tough and physical as Butler, winning 65-57. Florida then put some major hurt on Oregon 85-77 to advance to the Final 4 once again.
No. 1 Seed Florida is trying to become the first team since Duke in 1992 to win consecutive national titles. A lot of fans have other favorites besides Florida, but to be the national champion that team will have to upset the defending champion Florida first.
Oregon's Tajuan Porter, the 5-foot-6 freshman guard no other big school wanted, was sizzling against UNLV, getting nothing but net while setting an NCAA regional record with eight 3-pointers among his 33 points. Unfortunately, Oregon's normal hot shooting hand was cold against Florida when it came time to finish.
No. 1 Ohio State had all it could handle against Tennessee. Freshman sensation Greg Oden was in foul trouble and the Buckeyes were down 20 points when senior Ron Lewis and Mike Conley brought Ohio State back to life down the stretch to win 85-84.
Lewis scored 18 of his 25 points in the second half and Conley scored 9 of his 17 from the foul line, including the winner with 6.5 seconds left.
Ohio State dodged the bullet against Tennessee and then crushed Memphis 92-76 to advance to the Final 4.
The No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks were not the fanny kickers many predicted. Kansas barely got by #4 Southern Illinois 61-58 when Tony Young missed a desperation 3-pointer from halfcourt at the buzzer. When it was over the Jayhawks were probably saying their prayers.
Apparently No. 2 Seed UCLA did not miss much of the Jayhawks performance against Southern Illinois as they crushed Kansas 68-55 to eliminate the Jayhawks and move on to the Final 4 for a record 17th time.
The Bruins Arron Affalo, absent in some big games for UCLA as the season ended, resurfaced with 15 of his 24 points in the second half and looked like the Pac 10 Player of the Year that he was coming into the tournament.
Before taking care of Kansas, UCLA never trailed in eliminating Pittsburgh 64-55. Ben Howland coached Pittsburgh to some major successes before leaving Pitt for the UCLA job. Pittsburgh's head coach Jamie Dixon is Howland's best friend and Howland's former assistant coach at Pitt. Someone had to lose, perhaps it is better that Dixon's mentor won.
Given the success Howland has had at UCLA and also Dixon at Pittsburgh there is no question that they will meet again in the playoffs at some point in the future.
North Carolina looked like a No. 1 Seed in eliminating No. 5 Southern California 76-64 even though North Carolina was down by 16 early in the second half. When it counted, Southern California folded like cheap K-Mart deck chair; they mostly did a lot of looking around while North Carolina went on a scoring spree.
But North Carolina picked up some bad habits while watching Southern California fold. The Tar Heels were up by 13 against Georgetown but completely collapsed at the end, making only one field goal in the final 9:54 of regulation and the first 4:52 of overtime.
During that stretch North Carolina missed 21 of 22 shots from the field as the Hoyas shut them down with their zone defense, arguably the best zone defense at game's end in the tournament.
With only 31.2 seconds left in regulation Georgetown's Jonathan Wallace, an unlikely hero, tied the score with a three-pointer, sending the game into an overtime period that Georgetown dominated, finally winning 96-84.
North Carolina coach Roy Williams was apparently playing with a team full of underclassmen, and it showed down the stretch.
You could call Georgetown the comeback team as the Hoyas were down 13 to Vanderbilt before coming back to win 66-65 and qualify to face North Carolina.
There have been no less than 10 double-digit comebacks in the 2007 tournament, but none will be remembered a year from now. At this time next year, we will only remember who won the national championship, most of us may even space out on who they played.
It is as it always is, it is much easier to remember who won rather than who lost. Remember, it is basketball, it is a game, not the game of life, that will come later when these marvelous athletes move on to the next chapter of their life.

Dikembe Mutombo's Early Life Bio As a Student Athlete For the Georgetown University Hoyas
The 7'2" basketball player commonly referred to simply as Dikembe Mutombo actually has a much longer full name that is definitely a tongue twister for most westernized English speakers. The Congo native actually has a full name that consists of Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo. With a full name that complex it is no wonder that American sportscasters long ago shortened the name of the accomplished hoops player down to Dikembe Mutombo decades ago.
As briefly mentioned Dikembe Mutombo hails from the Congo region of Africa. Dikembe came to the United State through joint efforts by himself, the United State Agency for International Development (USAID), and Georgetown University Hoyas head basketball coach John Thompson. These three entities are responsible for providing opportunities for Dikembe Mutombo which he has responsibly taken advantage of in a manner that has allowed him to give back tremendously.
While most seven foot basketball players who arrive on campus for their freshmen year have making it to the NBA as their number one career goal Mutombo had a different set of priorities when he first arrived on the Washington D.C. campus of Georgetown University. Mutombo was playing basketball in the Big East conference not merely as an avenue for generating exposure for the NBA Draft but rather as a means of paying for his education in his attempt to become a medical doctor.
Life was confusing for the young Mutombo when he first arrived in the United States. Despite being larger than 99% of full grown men he was still a kid at heart. Chief amongst the cultural differences was the fact that Dikembe spoke pretty much no English whatsoever. To compensate for the language gap Dikembe Mutombo began his schooling in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program that was offered at Georgetown.
As a college basketball player Dikembe Mutombo was outstanding, particularly on the defensive side of the ball where his athleticism and shot blocking prowess could really flourish. Although a bit raw on the offensive end of the court he was able to make up for ball handling shortcomings with raw physical talent.
Away from the court Mutombo was an excellent student who worked hard in the classroom despite the promise of financial rewards in professional basketball that were all but guaranteed. As an undergraduate student despite his standout size and international celebrity he spent his summers working in traditional internships like most other Georgetown University student. Before receiving his diploma in diplomacy and linguistics he spent summers interning at the World Bank and the US Congress.
Sam, the author of this article, thinks that when Mutombo isn't working on his humanitarian efforts he may rendezvous with other great Georgetown Centers for a game of golf from time to time. Georgetown heritage site is declared as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites last July 7, 2008 along with the town of Melaka. This was made possible by showcasing a great example of multicultural town deeply embedded with fascinating history. Guided tours and touring the area is termed Georgetown Heritage Walk since you can literally walk to all four corners of Georgetown or if you insist, you can hire rickshaw to explore the whole vicinity. John Thompson - Former Famous Basketball Coach For Georgetown University Hoyas - Bio
John Thompson is best known as the former basketball coach for the Georgetown University Hoyas. After a six year stint as a Washington D.C. high school basketball coach Mr. Thompson took over head coaching duties at Georgetown in 1972 and made a 27 year career at the institution of higher learning.
Chief amongst his numerous accomplishments is the distinction of being the first African American head coach to win a national championship in in any major American college sport. In 1984 Coach Thompson successfully coached the Hoyas to a NCAA championship with an 84-75 win over a very talented University of Houston squad. The University of Houston team at the time garnered the nickname Phi Slama Jama for their explosive fast break play and acrobatics around the rim. The two most prominent players from the highly athletic squad are hall of famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.
Thompson was born in September of 1941 and grew up in Washington D.C. where he excelled as a star center for Archbishop Carroll High School. After playing in three straight city championship games from 1958-1960 the man who would eventually grow into a 6'10" 270 frame moved 400 miles from home to attend Providence College in Rhode Island. At the time of his college graduation in 1964 John Thompson left Providence College as the all-time leader for the school in points and field goal percentage. For his efforts he was recognized accordingly as an All-America basketball player his senior year.
After playing two seasons in the NBA and picking up two NBA championships in 1965 and 1966 as a backup center for hall of famer Bill Russell with the Boston Celtics Thompson put his playing days behind him while still in his mid 20s and shifted career paths to pursue his true calling of being a basketball coach. John returned to Washington D.C. where his successful coaching record of 122-28 with St. Anthony High School garnered the attention of Georgetown University who hired him as their head coach despite his having no previous college coaching experience.
At the age of 30 Coach John Thompson took over a Georgetown basketball program that had gone 3-23 the year before his arrival. Thompson quickly turned the team around and over his 27 years at the helm posted an impressive winning percentage where he won more than 71 percent of his games.
When John Thompson stepped down from his head coaching post on January 8, 1999 he retired from the game mid-season and only four wins shy of reaching the 600 win mark for his career. Thompson went on record as siting issues with his marriage as being behind his unexpectedly early retirement. Later that same year on October 1, 1999 John Thompson was inducted into the basketball hall of fame.

Historic Georgetown Colorado - A Great Way to Spend a Day!
There are many small towns in the United States that are considered by many to be historical and fewer that actually have the coveted status of historical by the actual historical society. Georgetown Colorado is one such town that has many structures and homes marked as historical.
Located about 40 minutes drive time west of Denver Colorado, this small town offers so much charm and is perfect for that stop off for a day trip if your on driving by on I70. Or for many Colorado residence, this makes for a great weekend getaway!
Georgetown offers more than just a historic small town to visit. The Georgetown lake is visited by many and is known as a great fishing lake for rainbow trout and even some good size brown trout! Not into fishing? There is much to see in the old historic downtown area which includes some great shops and fantastic restaurants to cure your hunger!
Last but not least is the famous "Georgetown Loop Railroad". This is a must see if your stopping off and well worth the small admission price for the ride. This train ride is great for the entire family! There are many different specials that happen throughout the year and you can find more on this great train ride at: georgetownlooprr.
The first thing you will find when you exit I70 into Georgetown is a really nice visitor center. I urge anyone to stop and check out this visitor center and view the rich history of this town displayed throughout. Well worth your time!

As one of the most storied neighborhoods in Washington, D.C., Georgetown is frequently perceived by tourists as a stately and affluent area -- home to senators, congressmen, diplomats, and legendary hostesses.
