Patrick Ewing was born in August of 1962 and would go onto become a force on the college basketball scene as a member of the Georgetown University Hoyas basketball team before having a dominant career as a professional basketball player in the NBA. Long before taking the hardwood for the Washington D.C. based Georgetown college basketball program in the mighty Big East Conference Ewing was born in Kingston, Jamaica. It is an interesting piece of trivia that before playing his college basketball in the capital city of the United States of America Ewing was born in the capital city of Jamaica. Patrick spent the first decade of his life in Jamaica where as a young man he excelled at a couple of the most popular sports in the country which at the time were cricket and soccer. The natural athletic prowess that Ewing later demonstrated on a global scale was evident even in his youth as a young Jamaican resident.
At the age of 11 Patrick Ewing moved to America with his family and settled down in the Boston, Massachusetts area. The specific location within the greater Boston area that the family moved to is known as Cambridge, Massachusetts, which happens to be where Harvard University is located. Ewing first began playing basketball as a high school student at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS) which is noteworthy for being the only public high school in the city of Cambridge. The high school where Ewing played basketball is known for having racial diversity un-matched by nearly any other school in the state. An interesting bit of trivia is that in addition to claiming Patrick Ewing as a famous alum CRLS is also the high school that actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon attended roughly ten years after Ewing.
Thanks in part to his seven foot build and eight foot wingspan Patrick Ewing was an extremely highly recruited college basketball prospect. Despite having full scholarship offers from top colleges all over the United States Ewing elected to stay relatively close to his family in choosing to play basketball for Georgetown University. Although Cambridge, MA and Washington D.C. are nearly 450 miles apart along the eastern seaboard that distance proves to be a quite manageable flight or a trip that can even be driven.
As a basketball player at Georgetown Ewing was one of the top players of his era and one of the best of all-time in terms of allowing his personal greatness to positively influence the success of his team in terms of wins and losses. During the four years that Ewing played center for Georgetown University his team reached the college basketball national championship game during three of those seasons (winning in 1984). After being named a first team All-American for his efforts in college basketball Ewing helped the United States win a gold medal in the 1984 Olympics a few months after his graduation.
